HISTORY OF THE MAINE COON
Fried Meat Ridge Farm Maine Coons
THE LEGENDS & BELIEFS
The Maine Coon cat is truly an extraordinary feline, so it's no wonder that many legends &
tales have surfaced in regard to the true origin of the breed. One popular story claims that
Maine Coons descended from cats belonging to Marie Antoinette, supposedly sent to America
before her attempted escape from France. Another old myth suggested that they were part
raccoon because of their bushy tails & coloring. Although unlikely, this resemblance
may have helped inspire the “Coon” part of the breed’s name. A more realistic explanation of where these beauties have come from is the idea that long-haired European cats (possibly including ancestors similar to Norwegian Forest Cats) arrived aboard ships & bred with local domestic cats in New England.

THE WORKING CAT
In New England, the Maine Coon adapted to the cold, harsh climate. Their thick water-resistant coats, bushy tails, large paws, & sturdy bodies made them especially well suited to snowy winters & rugged farm life. Maine Coons became valued working cats on farms & ships because of their excellent hunting skills (particularly when it came to controlling mice & other rodents).
THE MAJESTIC MAINE COON MAKES WAY TO AMERICA
Cat History & literature have Maine Coons arriving to North America via sailors & settlers. It's documented that they are closely tied to the state of Maine, where it eventually became the state cat.
By the late 1800s, Maine Coons were appearing in American cat shows. A brown tabby Maine Coon named Cosey famously won "Best Cat" at a major cat show held at Madison Square Garden in 1895. Fast forward to today, Maine Coons are highly sought after and are one of the most recognizable & popular pedigreed cat breeds. Their history helps explain the personality they are known for today. Maine Coons developed as hardy, social working cats that lived closely alongside people, which contributed to their reputation as friendly, intelligent & adaptable “gentle giants.”
